Hello all,
My name is Stephany, and I’m currently a freshman at CCNY majoring in early childhood education. For my first English class of the semester, I took ENGL 10100, where I learned a lot of new skills and improved as the weeks went on.
This class focused on basic introductory writing skills, close readings, and understanding rhetorical situations, like identifying the audience, context, purpose, and tone of a text.
During this semester, we wrote two major essays, the Language and Literacy Narrative (LLN) and the Synthesis Essay. The LLN focused on our personal experiences with the English language and how those experiences shaped us. The synthesis essay was a research paper where we chose our own topic and strengthened our citation and research skills.
We also focused on three main readings, “Mother Tongue”, “Nobody Mean More to Me Than You..”, and “Should Writers Speak They Own English.” These readings were really relatable and meaningful to most of us in that class, as we used at least one of these readings in our essays to compare the similarities. Mother Tongue was definitely my favorite reading, as I used it in all three of my essays, and I am repeating the same thing over and over again.
Overall, I’m grateful for everything I learned in this course and hope to carry it into my future classes. I hope you enjoy my writings!
