For my translation 2, I decided to create a poster featuring the two symbols that represent immigrants, rather than a slideshow or animated cartoons. This way, it looks more powerful and makes the reader think. The Statue of Liberty represents freedom and the welcome of opportunities, given by France as a gift of peace during the American Revolution. However, things in the U.S. have not been welcoming at all, especially to immigrants and those who are different races. So in my poster, the Statue of Liberty is shown in the background of Hispanics crossing the border, supporting them and showing that she’s on their side. The monarch butterfly in the corner represents the long journey many immigrants have gone through. Monarch butterflies are most known for migrating long distances, so comparing that to Hispanic immigrants who cross borders and travel on foot shows the connection, their reasons being the same of wanting to find something better for themselves.
